Ulla Sivunen is a Finnish Deaf academic currently pursuing doctoral research in applied linguistics and inclusive education at the University of Jyväskylä. Her work focuses on media use, multiliteracies, linguistic agency, and accessibility among young deaf and hard-of-hearing people in digital environments.
Early Education and Academic Background
Ulla Sivunen completed a Master of Education in Class Teacher Education at the University of Jyväskylä between August 2001 and June 2006. Later, she earned a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from the same university, studying from August 2019 to June 2021[1].
Doctoral Research and Academic Position
Following her master’s studies, Sivunen became a doctoral researcher at the Department of Teacher Education, University of Jyväskylä. She holds a post-graduate study right and works as a grant researcher within the Faculty of Education and Psychology[2]. Her doctoral project, known as "Project VIKHMOT", is conducted under the Language Campus of the university[2][3].
She served as a visiting scholar at SIGNS@HWU, a research cluster at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland, during January and February 2025[4].

Sivunen’s research spans applied linguistics, inclusive education, media education, media studies, technology-mediated communication and learning, accessibility, interpreting, equality, identity, language ideologies, and human rights[4]. She is particularly interested in exploring multiliteracies and linguistic agency among deaf and hard-of-hearing youth in digital and media environments[3][4][5].
